About

Surah al-Tawbah stands out among the chapters of the Quran with its powerful tone, deep political and spiritual lessons, and its call to sincere commitment. Often referred to as “Baraa’ah” (Disavowal), this Madinan surah addresses themes of hypocrisy, loyalty, jihad, and repentance at a critical juncture in the Prophet Muhammad’s ﷺ mission. In Part 1 of this class, students will explore the verses of Surah al-Tawbah, gaining context for the surah’s unique characteristics (such as the absence of the basmala), its revelations around the Treaty of Hudaybiyyah, and the political landscape of 9 AH. This study will deepen the student's understanding of divine justice, the requirements of loyalty to Islam, and the contrast between sincere believers and hypocrites.

Class Objectives:

  • Understand the historical and political context surrounding the revelation of Surah al-Tawbah, especially in relation to the Treaty of Hudaybiyyah and the Tabuk expedition.
  • Analyze key themes in the opening verses of the surah, including divine disavowal, treaties with the mushrikun, and the qualities of true believers.
  • Reflect on the relevance of the surah’s message in today’s world, particularly regarding commitment to Islam and sincerity in faith.
